Marteinn David Tomasson’s Teaching Philosophy What kind of teacher would I one day aspire to become? What set of beliefs will I have to fall back on so as to guide me in my day to day actions in the classroom? As I state my philosophy, I would like explain what I feel about today’s students, the role of the school and what my role will be as a teacher. Today’s students have had an unfair picture painted of them. We often see movies that portray students as either violent children that make a teacher’s life a living hell or as hopeless individuals that never seem to be able to learn a thing in class. Although these students exist, I argue that this is not an accurate image. Students today are children who are willing to learn and need someone to guide them in the right direction. Those students, who make it hard for the teacher to guide them, are the ones that make the job interesting. They provide the teacher with a perfect opportunity to put one’s problem solving skills to work. But where could one try and reach these children and provide them with guidance? The obvious answer is the school. However, a school is something more than a place for students to spend seven hours of their day in. I feel that a school is obviously the ideal place for a child to further his own knowledge. Schools serve a larger purpose by allowing the student to be in an environment that lets them learn more about the world from their teachers. It gives them the opportunity to interact with pedagogues who can provide future direction. What other place can these children go to everyday and experience great teaching from individuals that just might influence their future? All this occurs in a place called school! Therefore, my role as a teacher is to be a person that tries to pass on my specialized knowledge of History and Exercise Sport Science to these children. More importantly, I must instill my philosophy of creating a classroom that operates by set rules and is enforced by a stern but fair teacher. My goal is not to bombard these children with facts, instruction and unfair classroom rules. I am an individual that possesses a teaching style and philosophy that might just one day assist a child in deciding what they would like to do with their lives! |
